When I first read this book, I did not care for it much. However, this was because I had read an extremely misleading summary for it, and I went into the book with the wrong expectations. A few years ago, I picked it up again and decided to just read it without any preconceived expectations. And it turned out this was a delightful children's fantasy book. Murdoch is an apprentice to the wizard Tomorrow, and he accompanies his mentor in a series of magics bestowed on people. Many of them have a very "be careful what you wish for" tone to them, but the situations and the results are original nonetheless. Tomorrow eventually realizes that his apprentice has a very fond wish and grants it to him. I'm glad I gave the book another chance and, show more like some of those in the book, learned sometimes you must look beyond what you are given. show less
I simply adore Patricia McLachlans writing style! This off beat fairy tale is fun and endearing!
Well worth reading if you like fractured fairy tales or fantasy short stories as I do. Not as good as those by [a:Joan Aiken|12075|Joan Aiken|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1302626702p2/12075.jpg] ([b:The Last Slice of Rainbow and Other Stories|1512952|The Last Slice of Rainbow and Other Stories|Joan Aiken|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1270154843l/1512952._SX50_.jpg|75493514]) or [a:Megan Whalen Turner|22542|Megan Whalen Turner|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1489507023p2/22542.jpg] ([b:Instead of Three Wishes|2095278|Instead of Three Wishes|Megan Whalen Turner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328014527l/2095278._SX50_.jpg|39843]), for example, but show more with a unique charm. A mix of philosophical insight, humor, and sheer nonsense, for all ages.

(And yes, this is the author who wrote Sarah, Plain and Tall, then kept going with that successful pioneer theme. Back in the day she tried other things. Newbery Medalist Patricia MacLachlan explores what happens when a wizard would rather be human. “Notable for its elliptical style, which fosters a feeling of wonder, and its warm, affectionate view of life.”--The Horn Book
