Description
Fiction. Romance. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:Loyal. Beautiful. Professional. Impeccably organized. Potentially lethal. Sarah Stevens is a woman with many distinct qualities. First and foremost a butler par excellence, skilled at running large households smoothly and efficiently, she is also a trained bodyguard and expert marksman–indispensable to her elderly employer, a courtly gentleman whom Sarah has come to respect and love as a father. Then one night she thwarts a burglary in progress, show more a courageous act that rewards Sarah her requisite “fifteen minutes of fame” with the local press. But the exposure is enough to catch the attention of a tortured soul who, unbeknownst to Sarah, will stop at nothing to have her for himself.
Sarah’s perfectly ordered life is shattered when tragedy strikes: her beloved employer is brutally murdered. The detective investigating the case, assures Sarah that she is not a suspect. Until lightning strikes twice. There’s a second killing–and this time, despite a lack of evidence connecting her to the crime, Sarah cannot escape the shadow of guilt.
The only option left for Sarah is to carry on with her life. But she doesn’t realize that a deranged stalker is luring her into an elaborate trap . . . one in which she, once ensnared, might never escape. For Sarah soon finds herself at the mercy of a man who will tend to her every whim, smother her with affection, and crush her in his all-consuming embrace.
In a nonstop roller-coaster ride of unrelenting suspense, Linda Howard has written her most chilling novel yet. Dying to Please is a breathless thriller of desire and obsession. show less

whimsicalkitten While only a very small portion of Dying to Please describes the relationship between the obsessed abductor and his victim, that part did remind me of The Collector, although much more heavy handed and less elegant than John Fowles' work

This book is romantic suspense, heavy on the relationship drama and light on the suspense. I loved some parts. The dialogue/banter between the two main characters had me chuckling at times. I liked both characters and the storyline was interesting, if not a bit predictable.
Unfortunately, for me, too many things didn't work. I found the story dragged, with lots of repetitious inner thoughts about the merits of each character getting involved in a relationship with the other. I didn't actually see much of a relationship. The two characters only seemed to interact when having sex. Then, at the end when the killer is revealed, the story feels suddenly rushed. I didn't think the investigation aspect was well thought out or enacted. The last show more of several times that Sarah is considered a suspect verged on the ridiculous.
Overall, the drawbacks took away from otherwise great writing and made this on okay read. show less

While deciding what to do with my life, I ran across an article about butlers and butlering schools (for a few months I was dying to move to England and become a butler). This book brought back how cool I thought being a butler would be. The book also scared the heebie-jeebies out of me. Stalkers are a frightening subject to begin with, but add a couple dashes of insanity to the stalker and fright can become much worse. Good thing there are smart, sexy detectives to protect kick-ass female butlers.
Very good book even on second reading. I was reading a hard copy of this and I kept wanting to press the bookmark button to reference lovely bits of romantic dialog that the hero said to the heroine but dang it, I wasn't reading on my Kindle. I couldn't bring myself to dog ear my book. Maybe I should buy some of those flag tapes. ;-)
I liked the strong competent heroine and the cop who seems at first to be humorless and cold but when he warms up, wow what a sweetie.
If you like well done romantic suspense with a satisfying well done romance then you should really read this one.

Sarah Stevens likes her job as a butler and bodyguard to a retired Judge. As his only full-time employee she's quite close to him and really likes her job. When he dies she finds herself at a loss but then finds herself a new job. When those employers die she finds herself as a major suspect.
It's an interesting read that I really enjoyed. Sarah is a very interesting character with a lot of backbone.

I just can't stop. I think I'm going to read every Linda Howard book available in both the BPL and NYPL systems. Even when her books don't exactly work for me I find myself reaching for another, in some cases twice. I've read [b: Now You See Her |420731|Now You See Her|Linda Howard|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347803244s/420731.jpg|409864] twice, even though I only moderately like it. I think that after Prey I would have given up on an author, but nope, somehow I just keep on borrowing them, even when I don't mean to.
This is my 4th Linda Howard book. I enjoyed it alot. Good suspense and the main characters were fun and refreshingly honest. I will be on the look out for other books from her.
Good book, pretty entertaining. It was the typical thriller/romance, but with an interesting different story line. I love books that keep you turning the page and this was definitely one of those.
