Spilling Ink: A Young Writer's Handbook

As a child I personally struggled a lot with the writing process and had to get a lot of help from my parents, teachers and tutors. I wish this book had come out earlier! This "How to" book on writing for kids truly impressed me. Spilling Ink is a funny, informative, simple, yet straightforward look at writing by children's book authors. This book dives right into diagramming sentences and listing common spelling errors. The author's lay out what it means to be a writer and give students the means of creating great works of art. This book was written in a reader-friendly style. The author uses common vocabulary and provides examples continuously throughout. This book was almost written as a blag, the authors with the two authors taking show more turns giving advice. I was pleased to see such good ideas expressed so simply, not to mention humorously. This book has wonderful ideas and I love how the authors do not focus solely on spelling. The pictures are also really cute and funny. I would recommend this book to kids or adults, this book is really awesome! The only thing is that I would like a little more info for starting stories. show less

Spilling Ink is a delightful book of writing ideas, advice, and "dares" for beginning writers. Instead of chapters, there are themed sections, each dealing with a particular aspect of writing, from description to dialogue to creating setting and mood. The authors have a wonderful sense of humor! Each section subtitle is slightly goofy: "Adventures With show more Shoe-Box Dioramas" and "Competing With Smooshed Toads" were two of my favorites. I hope that this book finds its way into many aspiring writers' (and teachers') hands... I think it will make writing even more enjoyable for all! show less

Liked this more than I thought I would. Most writing books one reads are really dense but this one wasn't. Also some unique advice which tends to be lacking in most writing books.

I think this is a really great and fun resource for young writers.
