Description
"Visualization is the graphic presentation of data -- portrayals meant to reveal complex information at a glance. Think of the familiar map of the New York City subway system, or a diagram of the human brain. Successful visualizations are beautiful not only for their aesthetic design, but also for elegant layers of detail that efficiently generate insight and new understanding. This book examines the methods of two dozen visualization experts who approach their projects from a variety of show more perspectives -- as artists, designers, commentators, scientists, analysts, statisticians, and more. Together they demonstrate how visualization can help us make sense of the world"--Provided by publisher. show lessTags

Like the London Tube Map? Then you will love this book. This is an anthology of 20 essays on the topic of data visualization. Beautifully illustrated, with examples from many varied disciplines including: time series, textual origins, color, social patterns and social networks, hand drawn sketches. Chapters are primarily first person accounts of HOW the author came to create their set of visualizations. Includes visual illustations on: Blue State/Red States, NY Subway Map, airplane flight patterns, US Senate voting, YellowPages.com searches, Wikipedia authoring, NY Times articles, and (gag) even forensic postmortems. Recommended for designers and software developers who have ever struggled with how to present complex data -- others may show more like it just for the color pictures. show less
A wonderfully diverse book, you'll find discussions of Tufte, Illustrator and Java Algorithms in the span of several pages. The book is aimed at a very niche market, and some chapters may overwhelm the non-developers, while others will frustrate the non-designers.
