As Milo's story begins, you think he's just another hapless new kid in middle school, crushing on the cutest girl in the class and complaining about his teachers. But we eventually see that Milo's mother died and he's still missing her, but has been unable to find an outlet for expressing his pain. His friends Marshall and Hillary are supportive as he finds his way through the "fog" of grief, and the widow neighbor Sophia is key to inspiring his outward expression. Humorous and kid-friendly but touching, too.
This funny, kid-friendly novel with cartoon drawings helps children understand the struggles involved with change. Milo tells the story of hownothing is the same at home or at school since the death of his mother.
This is a story about Milo, a 12-year-old boy coming to grips with the death of his mother. It is sad, yes, but also pretty silly because even though Milo is deeply depressed about life without Mom, he's also funny and irreverent about pretty much everything else. So this book jumps from goofy to heartbreaking and back again many times.
This will definitely be compared to [b:Diary of a Wimpy Kid|389627|Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #1)|Jeff Kinney|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1255573105s/389627.jpg|2617009] because A#1 Milo is a wimpy kid and B#2 the text is peppered with cartoons. I would totally recommend it to Wimpy Kid fans, which is pretty much every kid in the world, right?

Milo is struggling on many fronts: making friends at a new school, navigating a confusing friendship (or romance?) with a girl who keeps putting notes in his locker, and quelling a massive crush on the "it" girl at his school. But the mountain of hurt underneath it all is the death of his mother, now gone two years, that he has not been able to come to grips with. What's it going to take to get him to begin facing it? To begin breaking his father's shell of silence? To begin to feel again? A surprising new friendship makes the difference, and his method for healing is unusual and heart-warming. Written in the style of a journal with cartoon sketches interspersed, this will appeal to fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but is thematically very show more different. show less
Sometimes it's the reluctant readers who are dealing with the biggest life issues. They'll likely be very glad to meet Milo. Funny, yes, but towards the end there were a couple of times I sniffled a bit. Good for anyone, really, who is trying to cope with loss. Interesting how it doesn't go into details, like why the family moves so often, or who the mysterious figure in the background, labeled big sister, really is.
How does a kid come to grips with the death of their mother? That is exactly what this book is about. The fact the author has found a humorous way to help deal with the tough topic of the death of a parent is amazing in itself. This book is a creative look through Milo's eyes at his life since his mother's death. The added benefits of reading this book, its healing effects are just gravy on top. I think with the recent death of one of our teachers this may give some students still dealing with that a little better perspective.
This book is a book about Milo and his two best friends. Milo is in love with a girl in his grade. He doesn't have barely any friends except for his two best friends. They only hangout together at their hangout spot in a pizza place. His friends are really shy and hyper. They only eat junk and have sleepovers at his house. He is a pretty cool kid he gets average grades and doesn't play sports. His life doesn't make sense to me after reading the book so much mystery.
This book was a good overall book but some was not as good as some other books. Like I said there was so much mystery left with no answer and there are no sequals that I know of. The book is like most other book about a kids life. With tons of obstacles in his way through show more life. This book turned his life into a morale showing us our life is a lot better than some other people's. He is a unique character in this book which makes it very good. It is a definite read for any kid in a high grade. show less
