Ballinger's Joaquin Hawks series is a forgotten gem of espionage tales. The stories are short (they all are about 128 pages each) without the superweapons and supervillains of the then-current Bond craze. Hawks is simply a CIA agent working in Southeast Asia. On this mission, Hawks is tasked with rescuing a young prince from Red Chinese hands. A good, quick, rewarding tale.

This book rises far above the typical 1950s paperback original in its characterization and lasting impact. It's the first Ballinger book I have read. Now I'm going downstairs to find another!… (more)
