This is the 16th in the Kate Burkholder series. Kate, formerly Amish, is police chief in her small hometown in Ohio in the middle of Amish country. When an excommunicated Amish man is found burned at the stake, Kate must unwind his history by interviewing the normally reticent members of that community. When suspicion falls on her brother, Kate is told to stand down in the case. Of course, she persists in pursuing the murder, knowing that the powers that be are pursuing the wrong line of inquiry. Along the way, some early history of the Anabaptists is revealed to possibly be a key to the crime and Kate and her new husband’s lives are put in danger.

Although I have only read three installments, I really like this series. Well written, with good character development and a solid plot, it is an engrossing, thrilling read. Kate is a strong, well adjusted female protagonist who does seem to get herself into dangerous predicaments. If you are new to this series and expect a cozy mystery, be forewarned that there are a few brutal scenes in it.

Where else can you find a police procedural, mystery, a thriller, and insight into the Amish culture? I do recommend this series and look forward to the next book. This book would work as a standalone.

Kate is preparing for her upcoming wedding to Tomasetti when she gets a call that someone has been killed by a crossbow. He is identified as Aden Karn, Amish and engaged to Emily. He is painted as a kind and sweet young man. However, Kate finds out that he ran with a cruel and sadistic group of men, those who enjoyed a lot of sex.
Then, another body is found, this time a young woman. As Kate continues to investigate, she finds that people are lying to her, or concealing information. When someone finally confesses a terrible story to Kate, and with a tip from the coroner, Kate remembers an important detail. When she goes to investigate, she realizes that she is in grave danger.… (more)

It has been a long time coming, but it finally happened as Dark Storm Rising: A Kate Burkholder Short Story by Linda Castillo begins. Kate Burkholder and John Tomasetti are married. The two are on their honeymoon and are going to spend time at an area on the shores of Lake Erie. It is a rare stretch of time off from their jobs as Chief of Police Painter’s Mill, Ohio, and BCI agent respectively.

On the drive in, both note that there are abandoned farms in the area. When Kate was last here, back when she was twelve, it was a thriving Amish community. Now twenty years later, not so much. The burnt remnants of a cabin on the property they will be staying at is also a sign that something bad recently happened.

Fortunately, their particular cabin at “Sugar Maple Cabins” is fine and awaiting their arrival. Mrs. Lovina Nisley and her husband, Enos, are wonderful hosts. Mrs. Nisley remembers Kate, as does Kate remember her, so soon they are getting all the news about what is going on in the area.

They are also the first people Enos contacts just a few hours later when Lovina goes missing during a snowstorm.

What follows is a fastmoving short story where Kate Burkholder and John Tomassetti do more than just help find Lovina. Readers learn a bit more about Kate and a certain summer when she was twelve. Events of that summer helped shaper her into the woman she is today. Readers long familiar with the series are sure to enjoy Dark Storm Rising: A Kate Burkholder Short Story as it is a good one.

The read closes with excerpt from this summer’s release, The Burning: A Novel.

Wow! This book is hard to read in that it is graphic and somewhat disturbing to read, but you keep on reading it.
The Plank family moved from Pennsylvania, to join the small Amish community of Painters Mill less than a year ago and seemed the model of the Plain Life—until on a cold October night, the entire family of seven was found slaughtered on their farm. They were murdered (shot at point blank range) and two of the young girls were tortured and butchered. Police Chief Kate Burkholder and her small force have few clues, no motive, and no suspect. Formerly Amish, Kate is no stranger to the secrets the Amish keep from the English—and each other—but this crime is horribly out of the ordinary. During the course of the investigation, disturbing evidence is uncovered, this evidence is hard reading and I found myself feeling quite sad and sickened.
State agent John Tomasetti arrives on the scene to assist. He and Kate worked together on a previous case during which they began a volatile relationship. They soon realize the disturbing details of this case will test their emotional limits and force them to face demons from their own troubled pasts—and for Kate, a personal connection that is particularly hard to bear.
When she discovers a diary that belonged to one of the teenaged daughters, Kate is shocked to learn the girl kept some very dark secrets and may have been living a lurid double life. Who is the charismatic stranger who stole the young Amish girl’s heart? Could the brother—a man with a violent past, rejected and shunned by his family and the Amish community, have come to seek out revenge? As Kate’s outrage grows so does her resolve to find the killer and bring him to justice—even if it means putting herself in the line of fire. A powerful read that does keep you enthralled throughout.
