About the Author
Karl Marlantes grew up in Seaside, Oregon. He was a National Merit Scholar, attended Yale University, and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He received the Navy Cross, two Navy Commendation Medals for valor, two show more Purple Hearts and ten Air Medals. His first book, Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War, was written in 1977, but wasn't published until 2010. His other work, What It Is Like to Go to War, was published in 2011. - Karl Marlantes, a cum laude graduate of Yale University and Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, was a marine in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals for valor, two Purple Hearts, and ten Air Medals. He has lived and traveled all over the world and now writes full time. He and his wife, Anne, have five children and live on a small lake in Washington.

Deep River: A Novel by Karl Marlantes
I picked up this book of historical fiction last year in Anacortes, Washington, thinking it would be good to read about Finnish immigrants, Wobblies, loggers and fishermen in Oregon/Washington in the early 1900's. And it was good to read about, but I am afraid that the book is over 700 pages, and I don't think that Marlantes is a good enough writer for that long of a book. His writing is OK, and I was interested in the characters, but there just wasn't enough of a punch to keep it from becoming a slog.… (more)

Intense. Exhausting at times. But almost instantly engrossing each time you pick it up. They should add this to high school reading lists for the Vietnam era.
A quick read, set in post World War II Finland featuring the relationship of U.S. and Russian veterans on assignment there, and their wives. I found the Cold War setting and history of the region interesting, but the relationships among them seemed a bit contrived and unrealistic. I've not yet read the author's highly regarded Matterhorn, so I can't really compare to that one.
Hard to read and harder to put down. If you know a soldier you should read this book.
