- Sir Thomas Overbury was murdered because of his involvement in a notorious 17th century divorce case. He was an advisor to Robert Carr (later Earl of Somerset), a favorite of King James I. Carr was also having an affair with Frances Howard, and when Overbury advised Carr not to marry her. . . she took revenge.
