Apples of Gold in Settings of Silver attempts to describe dining and dinners as the ultimate Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) -inclusive of one's guests and setting (as well as the food). The author takes us through 800 years of famous meals through the twelve chapters. Although I find the writing a bit uneven from chapter to chapter, the author magnificently succeeds in several chapters - describing in absolutely senuous terms famous meals and astounding dinners (especially those with Titian and Casanova) - these alone make the book worth reading.… (more)
