About meI, as I suppose most everyone here at LibraryThing, am a great lover of books...not to be confused with a lover of great books. I read them all...from the drivel (which is what my personal writing tends to be) to the sublime. Please suggest something new and exciting, or old and a snore - BUT - fiction only, unless it is astonishingly true.
Other than reading and writing (what else is there?), I love to travel, when I can afford it - most recent trip was to Hong Kong, unless you count the recent US excursions to NJ, PA and Nebraska. Next trip, not too sure, possibly Buenos Ares, Argentina. I'll keep you posted. Also, I'm *trying* to learn to play the guitar - acoustic guitar - not going so well, but once I master it, then I'll think about amping things up a bit.![]()
About my libraryThis library will someday (if I live long enough) be a catalog of books I own, books I've read, books I've loved, and books I've loathed (see Hemingway - I keep trying to like him - really). It should encompass the eclectic taste I have in reading.
I love simple, easy books and long, serious books in which total devotion is required to persevere to the finale. I love mysteries and fairy tales, characters who make me cry...or laugh...and those who do both.

I live west of a little town called Pittsboro, which is south of Chapel Hill off Hwy 64. We have 8 acres at the end of a cul-de-sac and love the isolation.

Thanks for flagging my library as interesting. I guess I live about 2 hours or so from you and it looks like we have quite a few books in common. I particularly like Harlan Coben. Loved The Uncommon Reader, too.

I'm glad to see you have Christopher Moore in your library. A friend keeps recommending him to me since I like Neil Gaiman so much. Must get his books!! :-) We definitely seem to have a lot in common!

I like what you said in your profile: a great lover of books...not to be confused with a lover of great books. That sounds like me.

By Max Ehrmann
Let me do my work each day; and if the darkened hours of despair
overcome me, may I not forget the strength that comforted me
in the desolation of other times.
May I still remember the bright hours that found me walking over
the silent hills of my childhood, or dreaming on the margin of a quiet
river, when a light glowed within me, and I promised my early God
to have courage amid the tempests of the changing years.
Spare me from bitterness and from the sharp passions of unguarded
moments. May I not forget that poverty and riches are of the spirit.
Though the world knows me not, may my thoughts and actions be
such as shall keep me friendly with myself.
Lift up my eyes from the earth, and let me not forget the uses of the
stars. Forbid that I should judge others lest I condemn myself.
Let me not follow the clamor of the world, but walk calmly in my
path.
Give me a few friends who will love me for what I am; and keep ever
burning before my vagrant steps the kindly light of hope.
And though age and infirmity overtake me, and I come not within
sight of the castle of my dreams, teach me still to be thankful for
life, and for time's olden memories that are good and sweet; and
may the evening's twilight find me gentle still.

Like you, my favorite Alice Hoffman books are Turtle Moon and The Ice Queen. I'm set to read Blue Diary after I finish my current book.
I noticed that we share quite a few books and favorite authors, including Christopher Moore. I'm new to his writings..I read my first Moore book a few months ago (A Dirty Job). I loved it and decided I wanted to read the rest of his books. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove is on my bookshelf waiting to be read. I saw you've read several of his books and would be interested to know your thoughts on Lamb, which will probably be my next Moore book after Lust Lizard.

Emma

Sorry to hear that you've been under the weather--do take care.
No, I had not read God Game--and have to admit, rather shame-facedly, that I've only read about the Sims computer games. I have Sim City, which I like but not any of the others.

Thank you for the very flattering compliment of adding me to you interesting libraries list!
As for how I got to Panama--I'd been wanting to leave the US ffor about 5 years, and after much investigation, settled on Panama as the place. Originally, I wanted ot move to Brasil, as I've spent a great deal of time there, but that isn't possible--the Brasilian government doesn't want Americans as permanent residents, and has made the requirements so stiff that few can meet them. Panama, then, was my second choice, but it turned out to be a good one. I'm really happy here. The only flaw in Paradise is--yep, books. I wouldn't even mind if there were libraries with books in spanish--force me to improve my Spanish--but this is a poor country and what libraries there are are small, inadequate and for school children. This is a rural area, and thus much worse off than, say Panama City. There are two, soon, 3 bookstores that carry English language books. One is a mediocre at best used book store whose only value to me is the occasional mystery. There is another, entirely too upscale store that carries books both in English and Spanish; I've bought an excellent bird book there, but it has very little else I'm interested in. Supposedly another English-language book store is opening soon. Given its location, it, too, will be small. None of these, by the way, is near me. I live near a small rural village that has a small store, a cantina, a church and nothing else besides the usual municipal offices. I only have two neighbors, and the one behind me is a very large cattle ranch!
So--I order books online. I checked out BetterWorld, and it looks as if it will handle most of the books I want. Plus saving me a fortune in shipping charges, it has the additional bonus of earmarking a certain percentage of its profits to promote world literacy. I'm all for that--a win-win situation if ever there was one.
Hope to chat with you soon.

Hmm, a book suggestion... We share a lot of my favorites. Maybe you would like to try "The Crimes of Charlotte Bronte" by James Tully or "Tunneling" by Beth Bosworth.

Have you read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Those books sum up Scaryguy to a tee, or is it tea? Wouldn't mind a cuppa about now. Come to think of it, when is now . . .
Cheers,
