I received this book via the Early Reviewers group.

Got a GTO and wonder if it's real or rebadged Lemans? What to know what parts ought to be there? Is your GTO one of the really rare ones? This book will help you find out. Many, many useful facts and plenty of pictures. ( )

Outstanding, any GTO enthusiast must have this book. It is a combination field guide, technical specification catalogue, price guide. It was enjoyable just going through it to refresh my memory about what a great auto Pontiac made with the GTO. The photos really add to the quality of the book. ( )

I received my copy of GTO: Data and ID Guide 1964-1974 directly from CarTech as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers group. I must say that I love everything about this book, from the handy size to color photos to the engrossing attributes for each model and variant of the GTO. On the size, this is more guide-book in proportions coming in at 5" x 8" and good for carrying - it will fit into the pocket of my jeans. The photography and printing was slightly light/over-exposed but seemed to show better details at this smaller format. The data was well laid-out and easy to find and hone into. I think any car enthusiast would welcome this into his/her library and I think it's well-worth having.

I owned a "74 1/2" GTO in 1984 - it was basically the last year of the venerable Goat on the Pontiac Ventura body (the "1/2" was the designation, at least colloquially for the big bumper blocks added to meet some US regulation). It was a real dog, made worse by the stock yellow paint, nose heavy due to the big block and the handling suffered quite a bit. I'd say many GTO enthusiasts don't include it as part of the line (but it is included in this book).

Also posted to Amazon. ( )

This is a nonfiction informational guide on the minutia of GTOs. For a small book (not pocket-sized as advertised, but still small) it packs a powerhouse of info. The author comes off as very knowledgeable. In writing this review, I actually had the opportunity to use this book while shopping for a GTO, and it was very easy and accurate. The book contains factoids, VIN decoding, options, production numbers, and many other items of interest to GTO owners. It also contains many very good pictures of GTOs, albeit some of which are not completely stock. Unlike many other books of this sort, this book is laid out in a very convenient and easy-to-use manner that you don't need to be a master cryptographer to figure out.

Because the book is advertised everywhere as pocket-sized, and is too large to fit in most pockets, and because the example pictures are not 100% stock, which would have made them better examples, then I would detract slightly from the rating. Still I think this is a great resource that every GTO owner or enthusiast should have on hand. Four stars, although I'd give it four and a half if I could. ( )

GTO DATA AND ID GUIDE: 1964-1972 : Facts, production numbers, option codes, data plate information & more by Peter C. Sessler is THE GUIDE for the true GTO enthusiast who wants the true details on his or her specific car. Over the years interest in restoring older model autos, specifically cars from the 1960s and 70s, has increased. A problem faced by the buyer of a restored car is authenticity. Are the parts original or modern, and are they part of the original car package or an afterthought from years later.
This book gives the 1964 through 1974 GTO buyer/owner facts to back up, or deny, any claim as to authenticity. Production VINs and engine codes, models of transmissions, casting numbers for various key parts and components, all are given by model year. Interior trim codes and authentic, original paint specifications are lovingly listed as well as many other details.
Also included are details for THE JUDGE, RAM AIR III AND IV, as well as information on how to tell if you Pontiac is a true GTO.
If you are lucky enough to own one of the original 515,797 GTOs that were produced during these years, here is the handbook you need to totally authenticate your beauty. ( )
