Bone Shop is a prequel novella to the Marla Mason novels by T.A. Pratt.

Plot:
16-year-old Marla has had it rough in her life so far and she’s ready to start fresh in Felport. By chance, she stumbles into a world filled with magic. And while she may not have an innate magical telling, she is stubborn enough to make up for that, as her mentor Artie quickly discovers. He takes her under his wing. Marla isn’t alone in working for Artie and learning from him, though – there’s also Daniel who becomes an important part of Marla’s life.

Bone Shop is a very enjoyable look at Marla’s youth and a nice read. Even though it is a prequel, I think it’s better not to start with it, but rather read it in publication order, as I did. That way, you’ll get the most out of it.

A good read as is the rest of the series, and of special interest as it finally tells us how Marla got into her line of "business". ( )

Marla Mason is a kick ass heroine. She does what it takes to to be the top sorcerer in Felport. This book tells how Marla becomes a kick ass heroine.

We meet Marla at the tender age of 16, follow her through sorcerer training as an apprentice, and at the of 20 takes control of Felport.

Marla was true to form in this story - but a much younger, more loving Marla. I liked learning about Marla's past. But, it felt more like a series of short stories, short vignettes into Marla's past. I would have liked a longer story. ( )

Book description
Marla Mason is the chief sorcerer of Felport, a woman who's tangled with gods and monsters and come out on top (if a bit damaged in the process). But she wasn't always a formidable engine of brute force and pragmatism; she started out alone, in a strange city, without allies or any more power than the average teenage runaway on the street. Marla was always willing to do anything necessary to survive, and it didn't take long for her to stumble into a world of magic, danger... and even the occasional moment of grace.

Bone Shop tells the story of Marla's evolution from runaway to sorcerer's apprentice to mercenary magician and beyond. Fans of the urban fantasy series from Bantam Spectra that began with Blood Engines will find surprising secrets revealed about Marla's past, and new listeners can get to know the character from the very beginning.
