This is a sweet, moving story I finished in just about half an hour. McKelvey has a wonderful way with words that is on full display here; masterful at showing, not telling, and leaving the reader wishing for more in the best way.
Oh mylanta. This book is so beautiful, on all the levels--the story, the illustrations, the depth, the everything.

I'm not sure what I expected when I picked it up, but holy smokes. I. Love. It.

The illustrations have layer upon layer of literary references, and the storyline is just so sweet. LOVE.
A very enjoyable read that is informational as well as fun. It is about the kinds of bugs you can find and where you usually find them. Bugs are my favorite insects because they are really interesting, complex creatures. For example, in the book, the spider makes a lot of web. If you like insects this book gets creepy. The creepy part is when the spider makes a lot of web and covers the child's bedroom as well as the child. The title, "Locust Pocus" makes it more interesting. It is very show more animated and helpful. It all rhymes and is fun to share with children before taking them to the Insect Museum. show less
The Wishes of the Fish King by Douglas Kaine McKelvey and Jamin Still (Illustrator) is a strange little tale for kids but at the same time it is very captivating. The illustrations are wonderful especially the Fish King himself. (as shown on the cover) A delightful book for kids.
