I would use this book in a second/third grade split classroom. I would use this book to teach the importance of health and why we need the certain types of food that we eat. I would have my students create me a story detailing of a fictional animal and what they feed their animal. They will need to break down the reasoning of why they feed that animal what they chose. I could also have my students tell of a time they went to the zoo (field-trip opportunity) and seen a sign that said "No show more Feeding the Animals". They would need to take what they have learned from our book and explain to me why they believe that sign was there. show less
I would use this book as a read aloud for a first grade class because it will be a great book to introduce them to new vocabulary. I would read the story aloud the first time to show all the students what types of food the animals at zoos would eat. Then I would read the story again and have the students answer questions related to what they see in the image. They will then have a worksheet that lists five animals we read about in the story and on the other side there will be a list of show more foods. The students will match the correct food to the correct animal. I would also use this book as a read aloud for a third grade class because it will lead to the topic of omnivores, carnivores, and herbivores. As I read through the book, I will have the students identify which type of animal they are and why they believe they fit in that category. Then as an extension, I would have the students take a trip to the Louisville Zoo where they will write down observations they have seen the animals eat. I believe this is a great book that can teach students about food webs and how animal diets are very different. show less
This book would be great for 4th-6th. It is filled with facts and questions that require a slightly higher order of thinking than younger students might have, and it would be good for research projects.
This book covers the animals at the zoo and what they eat and why. This book is great for young children who are curious about animals and why they do the things they do. Each animal has an explanation of what they eat and why. The crocodile, cobra, cats, etc. each get their own explanation.
