The translation is excellent; the NRSV is one of my favourite translations. This bible's other features are all generally pretty good as well, like the concordance and cross-references. The big problem I have with it is its footnotes: they either say things that are uselessly obvious, or they say things that are frutratingly simplistic or outright bad interpretations of the scriptures. It's gotten to the point that I can't actually use this bible any more because the footnotes get me so show more worked up. show less
Excellent classic. Some of the examples are dated (70's politics), but the principles are timeless. First three chapters are a good thumbnail sketch of the basics of Christian doctrine. The remainder shows how far we have diverged from Christian morality, even since the book was published. Be prepared to be shocked.
“The Harper Study Bible, Revised Standard Version (RSV) is an evangelical study bible with several attractive features. The black letter text is in a single column about 93 mm wide, with a highly readable … font. Pronunciation symbols are provided for place and proper names. Cross references are in the 26 mm outside margin. The inner edge of the text is 12 mm from the gutter. The book features a sewn binding. The pages lie flat and are easy to turn. ..
Harold Lindsell’s notes are well show more written and, compared to the English Standard Version (ESV) Study Bible, relatively sparse.
The Harper Study Bible RSV includes an eleven-page index to annotations, a 189-page concordance to the RSV, and 16 pages of (not particularly detailed) color maps and diagrams.
The RSV is not a perfect translation, but I like the fact that it retains archaic language in Psalms and prayers, as well as the traditional distinction between “shall” and “will.” The ESV is more literal and the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) is more readable, but the RSV preserves more of the beauty of the Authorized Version.”
