Tables for layout are back! Well, sort of. This book talks mostly about the Cascading Style Sheets 2 display:table property, which is usable in Internet Explorer 8. The property allows fairly easy construction of common grid-like layouts, including multiple column layouts, without resorting to floats and absolute positioning hackery. The book clearly explains how to use it, and how to gracefully degrade for IE 6 and 7. The book finishes with a glimpse at future css (only partially show more implemented across browsers) such as multicol, which implements dynamic flowing text across columns. Clearly written, with good examples which I'm likely to use. show less
As a webmaster for a local Public Works web site about 10 years ago, I was yearning for something new in my web page formatting. Traditional HTML just did not offer enough. I spent lots of time reviewing other web sites for ideas. Ultimately I realized CSS offered what I was after. Then I spent time researching books to help me learn CSS.

Designing Without Tables Using CSS was one of the better books I found. Its format matched my learning style and thinking. After experimenting I finally put show more together a decent web site. I found the book an excellent resource.

Now in 2012, this book is probably well outdated, but if I were in need of a resource to learn the latest web page coding language, I would definitely consider other books by this publisher/author. The accompanying book, The CSS Anthology: 101 Essential Tips, Trick & Hacks, was an excellent compliment.
