The first volume was great--inventive and fresh. But, as I have read/slogged through the next three, the writing got stale and repetitive. There are five or six unit level fights that thread through the tome and the reader knows the serial number of each round fired. It's too detailed and my brain can't absorb those details and still follow the story. So, I quit listening about an hour into this Vol 5; I don't think that I'll read Vol VI nor will I read any more of this author. The concept show more of a wartime artificial intelligence was squandered on bad writing. show less
This is the third book in the Red Storm series--. fast paced alternative history book. There are a plethora of characters ranging from the POTUS to the front line Sergeant; somehow, he keeps them all straight in the reader's mind. The thesis is intriguing, that Russia and China have plotted for years to push aside American hegimony. Author's military experience and/or research is obvious in the narrative, but he seems to have missed the idea that American forces fight as joint or coalition show more operations. For example, the use of Air Force and Navy "liaison officer" in Korea take the place of full up operational components. Also, POTUS makes operational decisions about bomber employment--remember LBJ? That said, the stories were exciting and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment. show less
I really enjoyed CIA agent Michael Stone, he is written really well so you can relate and connect to him and the others you will either love or love to hate. The story line is well paced and you feel like it could happen in the here and now which makes you sink further into this book. There were some great twists and tense moments that now have me hooked on the Michael Stone series and I can no wait to read the next installment.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
As a Veteran the scenarios, as artfully written here, are the sum of all fears. This is the story of an invasion of the USA by multiple nations and covers all levels from the very tactical to the political interactions. It's a pretty good book, number two of three or four in the series. The characters are generally familiar and if they aren't, they are introduced nicely. As the middle book in the series, it just seems to run out of words and one is expected to buy the next book. Yes, I will, show more but I'm disappointed at the marketing effort. And, don't try to read #2 without knowledge of #1. You'll be confused mightily. show less
