Earth is being helped, or is it?

Nathan Hystad outdoes himself with First Life (The River Saga Book One). Earth, in trouble after years of Climate change and Technological mismanagement, is saved in the nick of time by the Angor race of aliens.

Humans and Angors sign the Unity Accord and changes happen quickly all over the planet. Most new Angor cities are located on the coasts. The interior of the country is used to grow food.

Among other things that are changed is the air quality. But the show more Angor make a terrible error, for a small percentage of the population, they contract a fatal disease called Xeno.

Colton Beck from Fayetteville, Arkansas is one of the unfortunate people who contracts Xeno. His parents beg him to stay in Arkansas but he decides to seek what's left of his life in the Angor city in Los Angeles.

Hold on to your hat because the rest of this book is like being on a rollercoaster in the dark. When you think you've figured out what is going on, Slam! You're shoved blindly in another direction.

I threw my reader down, yelling, "No, you can't DO that!" at least 10 times including the end of this book. I am literally going right over to my book vendor and buying the next one. Incredible!

Canadian author Nathan Hystad seems to have published three or more books yearly for at least five years. He runs a small press—a tool he makes available to other indie authors. Confrontation is the first book of a six-book series published from 2019-2021. It scratches the itch for straightforward military sci-fi with a few new twists. It begins, like James S. A. Corey’s The Mercy of the Gods, with an overwhelming planetary invasion in which many are killed and some are enslaved and show more brainwashed. Tom Baldwin, the newly minted captain of the Concorde’s latest warship, is dispatched to meet the threat. His crew includes a paralyzed woman who operates an android body and an AI that is based on an upload of his dead grandfather.
Is Confrontation as good a book as The Mercy of the Gods? Well, no. But it is entertaining enough.

Mixed feelings about this one...

Main character, Dean, an accountant, has recently lost his wife when the alien ships arrive. He remembers that his wife told him to wear the necklace when the time was right. When beams from the ship begin capturing humans, he knows this must be the time. The necklace protects him from the beams, and he suddenly finds himself one of the last few humans remaining on Earth. Others who he encounters have also been provided the same protection, and are now left show more with a huge task facing them in fending off the invaders.

The first book in a 22-part series, it is a fairly quick read. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Luke Daniels, whom I've found to be an excellent narrator, except for this book. His narration had a campy, corny action hero vibe that detracted from a decent story.

The story was decent enough for me to consider continuing with the series, just not in audiobook form. The writing was OK in places, not great in other places, but the story ended containing some unexpected twists and turns that keep the reader guessing.

A languid yet riveting sci-fi thriller that'll keep you guessing.

When she was fourteen, Eva's life was forever altered when she was missing for a week from the small lakeside town where her family spent the summer. Nineteen years later, her boss sends her on assignment to report on the strange goings-on in the same community.

There's a definite X-Filesness to this story. It's a tale of 'was it or wasn't it? with strong characterisations.
