*Historical Fiction* This story is about a young African-American girl named Josie who lives in an apartment with her family and grandmother in the 1950’s. Her grandmother once lived in the south but moved to the North for more freedom and opportunity. Josie and her grandmother want a yard with a garden like in the South, but are unable to buy a home in a suburb due to the amount of racism and bigotry taking place at that time. Josie and her grandmother end up getting a small plot in a show more community garden in their city neighborhood. I enjoyed this story because it was very interesting and reflective of how African-Americans were actually treated in the 1950’s. The main point of this story is to illustrate how badly African-Americans were mistreated back in the 1950’s. show less
*Historical Fiction* This story is about a talented young pianist named Sandy who has a physical disability because she contracted Polio as a child in 1954, a year before the vaccine was available. Because the story takes place in the 1960’s, a lot of buildings are not yet wheelchair accessible. At one point in the story, this becomes a problem for Sandy. I enjoyed the story because it spoke about civil rights as well as the fact that children with disabilities can also be very talented. I show more think the main point of this story is to show how difficult a simple task like entering buildings used to be for people with physical disabilities. I think the other main point of this story was to show that just because a child has a disability, he can still excel in many other areas of life. show less
