Emotional baggage from past offenses will remove the joy from your life and place a barrier between you, God, and others. Reconciliation is a solution but may not always be possible. Forgiveness, however, is an option which can work in every situation.
This is my "go to" book when working with people through the hard issues of life. Augsburger does an excellent job dealing with the role of forgiveness in life. For those holding on to reconciliation and fair compensation, he reminds us that in show more the most grievous offenses, there is little or no ability of the offender to "fix" or "compensate" the offended sufficiently. The World's legal systems try to "fix" and "compensate" injured parties and, in doing so, devalue them. God, through Jesus Christ, has provided a different solution, one that satisfies our longing for justice and compassion. show less

Dissident Discipleship: A Spirituality of Self-Surrender, Love of God, and Love of Neighbor by David Augsburger
A truly thought-provoking book about discipleship based on the Anabaptist traditions. Highly recommended to anyone involved within a Christian community (such as a church, school, etc.). A few of the chapters that really spoke to me were about habitual humility, stubborn loyalty, authentic witness, and subversive spirituality.
This is my top pick for any group trying to work through the hard task of what forgiveness IS/ISN'T and how best to make that journey. It speaks to the heart of a community's ability to truly live out forgiveness. Challenging but very rewarding!
