Small photobook of the Getty Center, Los Angeles. Artistic pictures of the complete center from various angles and natural light. The Getty is a modern edifice but adapted to the natural environment and spatially reaches out to the city below. These photos feature no guest visitors which give the impression that the reader sees it on the first day of opening. Included are the museum, plant and flower garden, theatre, tram, academic research library, art and science laboratory. This souvenir show more book gives a powerful overview of the hilltop location and environs. There are two restaurants and a large gift shop which are not featured here. This is a must see on any tourist visit to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the Getty is often shrouded by smoke from flames burning around Los Angeles. Either the beach areas of Malibu and Santa Monica or Pasadena and Azusa are to blame from state, city, and county mismanagement on a grotesque scale. show less
A counting book put out by the Getty Museum. This states the letter an object begins with, and then highlights part of masterpiece that has that object in it, and then gives the artist’s name and title of the work the sample is from. For example, “I is for iris,” has a portion of Van Gogh’s Irises, and gives the information of his name, birth and death year, painting title, and year painted. My favorite was the “cheat” on the X page. At the end of the book, they show the entire show more painting for each letter.

There isn’t a story in this book, just color paintings, however I found it engaging and think it’s a terrific introduction to fine art. For those who visit the Getty museum, this book would be a great previsit activity to make the time spent at the museum more rewarding, as I would assume all paintings in the book would be found there. The size of the print, the text, and the paintings are appropriate for children from ages 2 - 8.

The Getty Museum concentrates on art before the modern era. Its collection of paintings has a variety of works by major and lesser artists in Europe. This book is not a complete catalogue but gives substantial information about the individual paintings and artists. Most of the reproductions are large enough for the reader to appreciate detail
Purchased 6th edition copy at the museum. Nice description of a large number of items from all parts of museum. I also have another similar such book from the museum in my library. Introduction includes biography of J Paul Getty.
