Jeff Ball (1939–2011)

Has some very limited bad information in it but largely a good and straightforward guide to composting, including some of the science.

Ball clearly explains the mechanics of composting and goes into great detail about what you should and should not compost. He also outlines different methods of composting and how to choose one. I found the book less helpful in actually setting up a compost bin--I went with a garbage can bin, which it does not mention--and in troubleshooting an active compost pile. It's a good introduction; any number of web sites can fill in the gaps I mentioned, but they don't go into as much detail about show more options, materials, and mechanics. show less
