This is a collection of memories of war service by twenty veterans representing all service including women's. I did notice errors in fact in the descriptions but these are really unedited and not researched memories. Some of the stories present veterans who experienced unusual or extremely historic moments
Peter Cottingham was a member of the 1st Special Service Force better known as the Devil's Brigade and his view of that organization is decidedly less positive than the books and movie. show more The Warren twins served in the RCAF in the same Spitfire Squadron often flying as one another's one and two. Stanley Grizzle was refused a room at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto while in full uniform because he was Black. When it happen again Quebec City at the Salvation Army's hostel, his commanding officer made such a stink, the clerk at the hostel was fired and the Sally Ann apologized to Grizzle.Other memories are about the courage of European civilians who risked their lives to save downed airman or what the horrors the foot soldier experience when attacking or is attacked. One radar operator was there the day the Bismarck was sighted and damaged and in his essay we learn that most radar operators on British ships were Canadian. show less
