The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting by Jason Fung
Behind every youtuber, every blogger, every guru about fasting, the secret they all at one point or another reveal, is that they are all followers of Jason Fung.
Based on GoodReads reviews of both books, I almost didn't read this book, picking up The Obesity Code, which Fung released 6 months before this one, instead. Don't make the same mistake. This here is hands down THE BEST BOOK on losing weight EVER. It is so much more detailed and at the same time concise than The Obesity Code. It is show more readily apparent after reading both of them, that he really just took all the material from the first book, responded to criticism and quieries, and then re-released the updated edition as this book. It is a whole new book, however, because it is so much more concise. He cuts out so much filler from the original that really slowed it down. And all the best recipes from his The Obesity Code Cookbook? They're included here too! He really takes it all just that little bit further, filling in all the gaps and questions I still had after the Obesity Code. There is no need to read it. Just this one. There were a couple typos and syntax errors near the end of the published version of The Obesity Code, which left the impression that his publisher probably didn't help him any with editing. Well, with The Complete Guide to Fasting, we get the self-edited version AND IT IS GREAT!
What's more, Fung's approach as a public health professional is so much better than everyone else trying to make a name for themselves in the field. You leave understanding why Raw (lower sugar), Paleo (whole foods), and Warrior (intermittent) diets all sort of work; he accessibly explains "why" to you; and based on that understanding leaves you with flexible guidelines that empower you to take your own decisions and adapt your diet on the fly yourself. He is not overly restrictive, prescriptive or dogmatic and fills the book with praise of other professionals in the same space - helping build a movement and community to spread these ideas in the public realm.

The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting by Jason Fung
Literally a life changing book. About 5 1/2 months ago i started OMAD. OMAD is eating just one meal a day. It's a form of intermittent fasting and corresponds to the one in Dr. Fung's book which he labels 20:4 intermittent fasting. I've lost 40 pounds and 3 inches around my waist so far. The amazing thing is that this is not a diet. I can eat what i want, but just during my 4 hour eating window. My insulin resistance is going down. I'm a type 2 diabetic and right now using about 1/3 the show more insulin daily that i was using before. My blood pressure is coming down. My doctor was very impressed with my weight loss, but even more impressed that my hba1c had gone from 6.7 to 5.6.
The essence of what Dr. Fung communicates in this book is that we gain weight and become diabetic because of high insulin levels, which comes from eating too often and eating too many carbs. The solution is very straightforward. Your body needs time to recover from the overwhelming amount of insulin and it can do this through fasting. He discusses fasting for 2 times a week, 3 times a week, intermittent fasting (where you eat every day, but spend most of the day not eating), and finally, toward the end he discusses longer term fasts like for 1 to 2 weeks. I'm having such good results i've not felt a need to try anything like that. I honestly think i can eat one meal a day for the rest of my life.
If dieting hasn't worked for you (and it really doesn't seem to work long term for hardly anyone), this is something i can highly recommend. He spends some time discussing the Biggest Loser TV show and why there has never been a reunion show, and why there never will be one. All but 2 of the participants to date have gained back all their weight. Cutting calories and exercising does not cause weight change which lasts and he explains why. show less

The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting by Jason Fung
This is an easy to read, in fact enjoyable, exploration of the different types of fasting and its benefits, both for weight loss and also to combat diabetes. You learn the science behind why fasting works, especially when combined with a high fat, low carb (keto) diet. Fung collaborates with a popular health blogger, Jimmy Moore, whose first chapter describing his extreme, lengthy fasts is meant as encouragement (or a sanity check). Inspiring and educational quotes are also interspersed show more throughout the book by a cohort of fasting "all stars." There is a lot of "how to" here, especially in the final section of the book which is filled with recipes, which seems a bit of an oxymoron in a book about fasting. But this book is eminently sensible, and it is also about healthfully celebrating the "break fast." Fasting, at the end of the day, is more intimidating and scary, than it is, in fact hard. This book will help you to muster the courage to take that first step. Bon appetite. show less
The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting by Jason Fung
Jimmy Moore is a leader in the HFLC world. He is also someone who puts his money where his mouth is - excuse the pun - meaning, he follows his own advice. Alone with Dr. Jason Fung, they have teamed up to write a book about the benefits of fasting.
Personally, I already knew that fasting was good for the body. My own experiments with it have proven that true. But I wanted to know more about the science and methods. This book delivers both. Using clear language, neither muddled with medical show more jargon nor watered down for the masses, Dr. Fung writes about his own research and experiments with fasting as method for treating Type II Diabetes. He goes over the how and whys and gives strategies for how to start fasting. There are even recipes for when the fast is over! And each chapter had at least a page of articles and studies published in reputable scientific sources to give credence to his assertions.
I highly recommend this book if you are considering this as a management tool for diabetes, or even just for weight loss. The few attempts I’ve made at his method have gone very well and I am pleased with the results! show less
