This is a good reference book that manages to to cover all aspects of software engineering: life cycle models, requirements, design, testing, metrics, it's all here. However, the book is quite theoretical. If you're looking for ways to improve your programming, this isn't the book for you (check out Code Complete by Steve McConnell instead).
The first software book I read that started me realizing that design was far more important than coding. I knew then that I was a good developer.
