The actual mysteries are increasingly dumb; they've long since abandoned any pretense of collecting usable evidence. But that works, because they've also clearly recognized that what keeps us watching isn't the writing, it's Falk. And by this point, this is The Peter Falk Show.

These episodes are all better than the TV movies, thanks to a 15-minute-shorter runtime, but that's still a half hour too long for a formulaic TV episode. And it still has the glaring (and seemingly unavoidable) problem of Columbo being the only interesting character.

They try to mix things up a little, with a lot of gimmicks. You can tell they're having fun on set, and I guess I am too, most of the time. But the foundation of the show is getting pretty wobbly.
