Quite good story about old destroyers, E boats and the assault on the docks at St Nazaire. Some interesting characters and a plot line that moves along coherently and supports the battle scenes well.. Similar to the excellent series of WW 2 books by Douglas Reeman. Hero not quite as angst ridden but humble, brave and committed to saving England. A little SOE wrinkle adds some intrigue and there is one good German officer.

An excellent end to a very good series. Good story lines, reasoned factual basis and interesting characters drive the plot quite relentlessly and to good effect. Each book contains more action than a classic movie serial. The requisite side bar for the femme fatale role is carried out with quite good effect. And the captain finally gets the girl.
A few skeins of history and a lively storyline drive this book and series very nicely. On detached duty wth the Italian Navy, Commander Smith leads a small detachment of MTBs against the Austrian Navy led by a German battlecruiser. Some time ashore supporting an Italian, retreat, then he takes on the German ship with some very unique weapons.
Evans writes in a similar style to Douglas Reeman. The story is fast paced and full of details about serving in the Royal Navy. In this case, the era is WW I in the Adriatic Sea in the vicinity of Venice. I f you enjoy naval fiction, this is a sure hit.
