Hilarious! One police team and one wives team do meticulous due diligence while a second police team is led by a veritable farce of a show more bumbling copper as comic relief. DI Dawes has to recuse himself when his wife is in the frame for the murder of her ex-husband so she and the "Fearless Five" go about investigating on their own. The whole thing is a laugh riot while also being an excellent crime thriller!
Now I have to go back and binge-read!

This book is the latest (book 13) in a long-standing British cozy mystery series DI Jack Dawes and, even though it was a first in the series for me (as well as a first by this author too), the storyline was easy to follow. The writing style and story arc flowed quickly and consistently and the murder mystery was written very well (I wasn't sure who the culprit was and there were plenty twists throughout). I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters' quirks and folksy wisdom and off show more beat humor. Will definitely return for more novels by this author in the future.

While investigating the death of a prostitute in London, Detective Inspector Jack Dawes is seconded to the Shetlands Island and Doomdochry Castle to help out a understaffed unit. His brief is to discover if a female's death was murder or not. But he is unable to initially unravel the mystery and not before a body is found.
Just about kept my interest going to read to the end though it had some likable characters.

All the characters are fascinating, but the ones on the Murder Investigation Team and their spouses (and the SOCOs and ME team) are the fun ones! It looks like several of the killings have been well planned, but the who and why take a while to be revealed among all the show more red herrings and plot twists. Don't forget about police politics! The murders are well planned but this is not one of those grim procedurals. The team is excellent at doing their due diligence and the wives help along behind the scenes. I loved it!
