I love that this book had a vocabulary tree at the beginning to help students describe how bugs look and what they have. I like that the book includes diagrams with labels pointing to the different parts of the bugs. I also like the end portion of the book where it shows the vocabulary words and asks you to point and say the different parts of the bug. I probably would not use this whole class because this is a little bit too easy of a book for whole group instruction for my students, show more however I think I would use it for emergent small groups because I think it's a great book to cover text features, to pull out key facts on the pages, etc. The age range for this book is 4-7 and the reading level is at a J. The DCI being explored in this book is life science because we are looking at bugs and their bodies. The CCC being explored in this book is cause and effect because the book talks about how bugs eat, using first then language. show less
FOLLOW ME! ANIMAL PARENTS AND BABIES by Shira Evans is part of the National Geographic Kids Super Reader series.

This series includes books for pre-readers through fluent readers. This Level 1: Co-reader book is intended for parents, adults, or older children to read with younger children. An icon indicates what “you read” and what “I read”. Chapters focus on finding food, movement, habitat, and using tools. At the end of each chapter, readers are given a task to think about or a show more problem to solve.

Librarians know that animal babies books are always popular. What makes this book particularly useful is the collaborative reading option. Consider using this book and other Level 1 co-reader books as part of a school-wide buddy reading program where older children read with younger children.

The National Geographic Kids books are really great, and I love that they have everything from detailed encyclopedias for older kids, to simple stories for preschoolers, like this one.
