This is part of the Centre for Caribbean Thought's series on major Caribbean thinkers and periods in the development of Caribbean thought. The New World Movement was built around the journal "New World" at the University of the West Indies in the 1960s. It made a significant contribution to political economy, both in naturalising dependency theory in the region and in developing the plantation paradigm as a way of understanding Caribbean history. Looking at New World from the perspective of show more the 21st century, as these essays do (and as the interview with Best, an important recapturing of the history of the times, does) is important in recalling to a younger generation just what was happening in the early epoch of independence. This is an important work that cuts across disciplines, and is worth reading not just by scholars but by people who are interested in understanding the newer Caribbean and the way that it is forming an identity. show less
