A puritan family is harassed by a witch.

Intense, and much more serious than I expected. It's creepy in an unsettling way, not a fun way. The basic conceit, of the witches of Puritans' nightmares being real, is wasted on a Crucible-style-witch-hunt story. You could cut out all the supernatural stuff and still have a complete (albeit far less interesting) movie.

C+ (Okay).

A vampire moves to Germany.

Viscerally upsetting rather than scary or exciting. It's very much an art film meant to provoke, not a horror movie meant to entertain.

No rape, no f- word. Religious colonists, exiled from colony, infant murder.
The source material for this movie is amazing. Folktales are a horror goldmine and it's a shame you don't see it being used so often. The movie draws you in with its original concept and setting. The approach to horror itself is unorthodox in the sense that most horror movies nowadays rely on obscurity or grotesque visuals. This movie shows horror in broad daylight, the camera is steady, there are no monsters, no gore. So... Realism. Including the supernatural scenes. You're asking , is this show more superstition or is this real? and 'who is the real villain?'. Sadly the charm is ruined by the bullshit ending, where those questions are answered in the worst way possible. 'The Witch' had some good ideas but it's far from perfect. show less
