I really thought I would enjoy this, Lee Allen’s Cooperstown Corner: Columns from the Sporting News, 1962-1969, with subject matter from that era all the way back to the earliest days of baseball. But the writing just doesn’t hold up. Allen’s style is bland and hackneyed, and I’m guessing these columns would have seemed ancient and creaky even back in the 60s when they were first published. A few interesting nuggets along the way, but otherwise a disappointing slog.
First published in the 1950s, this is an entertaining compendium of baseball lore told in a style of men sitting around the hot stoves during the long, cold offseason discussing the game they love. One of the finest baseball books ever written.
