The author harbors the view that gardening has played a major role in the rise of civilizations. [1] I have yet to find a City, or even a building, conducive to a "gardening" civilization. Aside from a few experts, and the revenant spirits from an ancient Eden, few folks have found the link between gardens and social development. Bienz' work will help. We don't have a moment to lose.(!)

This work integrates science with horticultural practice and explains why the well-known practices are show more sound. Concludes with a practical Handbook, Glossary, and Index.

Begins with a chapter on the historical relationship between people and plants, with taxa and classification details on the latter. The focus is on identification and use. For example, provides pictures and the labels needed in the comparative morphology of plant parts we use to group them. The Brassicas are highlighted. This chapter concludes with a Table of the "Nutrients in common foods" [14, charting calories, protein, fat, carbs and minerals]. Noting that "51% of American families now grow some type of vegetable garden" [13].

Chapter 2. Structure and Growth--The Vegetative Phase. Provides plant morphology and phases needed for planting and propagation. Explains the dormancy, growth, and chemistry of botanical life. Example: 6CO2 + 6H2O + 672 calories --> C6H12O6 + 6O2 {chemical formula for photosynthesis: carbon dioxide + water + radiant energy --> glucose + oxygen}.

Chapter 4. Propagation of Garden Plants.
Chapter 5. Soil and Soil Fertility.
