middlegrade nonfiction - biography/memoir - 14 y.o. writes about becoming a (self-published, but nonetheless serious) journalist and crime reporter at the age of 8.
TW: gang/gun violence, school shooting (Sandy Hook), Walter Scott shooting (by police officer), murder and attempted murder, eating disorder, depression, online trolling and unnecessarily hateful comments.
From her first crimescene (tagging along with her father when he's called to report on a murder case during her preschool show more years) to her taking a break from the Orange Street newspaper at the age of 14, this brave young person has a lot of interesting stories to tell. I liked the short, punchy chapters and hope to see more from her when she figures out what she wants to do. show less

{My thoughts} – Hilde and her sister Izzy pick up right where they’d left off in the previous book. They’d heard fire sirens and decided to follow them. The fire was an antique store that was well known in their area. The building was a loss and they were trying to figure out what started the fire.
The girls did some investigating and took many pictures. However, it wasn’t until they were looking at older pictures of the store, that they were able to figure out just what had caused show more the fire.
A lot of stuff takes place in case of an emergency such as a fire like is described within the pages of this book. I enjoyed reading this book and the lessons in which it teaches children. It shows children that you can make a difference while being safe at the same time. It also shows children that good investigating will lead you to the right answer and that it isn’t safe to assume you know what happened.
I think this is a great book and series for any child that is a fan of mystery. It’s also a great book and series for any child that likes to write stories about things going on in their lives. show less

{My thoughts} – Hilde and her sister Izzy pick right back up where the last book had left off. The last book ended with them catching a tip about a loose bear in the neighborhood. It would appear that once they learn about a story they have no choice in their own minds but to chase after the story that they got the tips about.
The bear that is on the loose is causing a bunch of mischief in town. Hilde and her sister want to try and find it before it causes more trouble. Hilde comes up with show more a plan to try and lure the bear to her house. At this point they aren’t sure if it is a big bear or not. Does her plan work? Do they get any good pictures? Whats the outcome of the story? Was it a bear? So many questions and they are all answered throughout the book.
This book was incredible. I am sure that any child that likes to ask questions, gets a bit nosey, likes a good mystery will love this book and series. This is definitely on my top loved list for children’s beginner chapter books! The best part about them are they are based on a real child’s life. Who doesn’t want to read about a child their own age being a reporter. It helps to show children that they really can be anything they want to be when they grow up and even before! I actually looked up the website at the end of the book, it’s rather impressive. I think I am going to add it to sites I frequent on the right of my page! show less

{My thoughts} – I found this book to be rather amusing. Hilde is a young child that is a news reporter on her street. She posts her news articles by deadline on a webpage. Her older sister Izzy takes the photos and tags along sometimes while Hilde is gathering information on crimes/hot topics/things of interest in her neighborhood.
Hilde finds out that there has been a break in on her street. As soon as she has that information she rushes to the police station to find out where it happened. show more She The officer she speaks with doesn’t seem to like her and brushes her off. That doesn’t stop her though, she just goes and starts asking her neighbors like any good reporter would.
This was a really face-paced easy to follow book. I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to read it with and share it with my girls. I must confess I had to buy the first five or so books after I’d received the sixth book for reviewing purposes. I like to read things in order so of course I just had to get the previous books. I am still waiting for some to come in the mail but I have the first two right now which lets me get a jump on the series.
