Ludwig Binswanger (1881–1966)
Author of Being In The World: selected papers of Ludwig Binswanger Translated and with a critical introduction to his existential psychoanalysis by Jacob Needleman
About the Author
Ludwig Binswanger was born in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, to a family of physicians and psychiatrists. He studied medicine in Lausanne, Heidelberg, and Zurich, and received his medical degree in 1907. While at Zurich Binswanger studied with Carl Jung and was a psychiatric intern under Eugene Bleuler. show more Binswanger's father Robert Binswanger was the director of the sanatorium Bellevue at Kreuzlingen, and Ludwig served as his associate from 1908 to 1910. Binswanger succeeded his father in 1921 and remained as medical director until his retirement in 1936. Binswanger was a friend not only of Sigmund Freud but also of Martin Heidegger, the existential philosopher, who visited Bellevue and discussed Binswanger's concept of existential analysis with him. Unfortunately, Binswanger's work is largely untranslated, and the books that are in translation are mostly technical. However, his small book of reminiscences reveals a great deal about both Binswanger and Freud. Bingwanger died in 1966. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
