An unassuming alligator is going about his daily life when he finds himself the object of a narrator's interest in this hilarious meta-fictional picture-book from author Julie Falatko and illustrator Tim Miller. Shadowed by unwelcome and unflattering narration, which paints his as a rapacious predator, Snappsy continually objects, eventually shutting himself in his home where the narrator can't see him. He relents in the end though, responding to the narrator and eventually inviting him in show more to the party he is throwing for his friends...
With its amusing meta-fictional conflict between character and narrator - I particularly enjoyed how the story stalled when Snappsy shuts himself away in his house! - Snappsy the Alligator reminded me rather strongly of Mélanie Watt's Chester, with its author/character shenanigans, and that is high praise indeed. An entertaining book, once which will involve children in the story through its clever back-and-forth, this would make an excellent read-aloud for story-time. Recommended to anyone who enjoys humorous and/or meta-fictional picture-books. show less

Impulse, cuz I've loved meta-fiction before it was in fashion. I was concerned that it might have been done to death by now, but no, this is a fresh take on it, and imo it's absolutely delightful. It also speaks to novelists who lose control of their characters....

Snappsy the Alligator and his narrator "friend" Bert return in this second amusing meta-fictional picture-book devoted to their adventures, following upon Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book). Opening some weeks after the party depicted at the end of that earlier book, this tale sees Bert pestering Snappsy, whose home he has not left, with his notions about their status as best friends, and the many sleepover activities they should engage in, as a result...
Like its show more predecessor, Snappsy the Alligator and His Best Friend Forever (Probably) pairs a hilarious meta-fictional tale in which the titular character interacts with his story's narrator (AKA Bert), with bright, colorful cartoon-style illustrations that perfectly capture the madcap humor of the text. I find Snappsy's eyebrows particularly amusing, but then, I have seen the artist, Tim Miller, draw them, so perhaps I'm at least partially entertained by the idea that these two lines can be used so expressively. Recommended to anyone who read and enjoyed the first story about Snappsy! show less

Moo Moo the cow and Mr. Quackers the duck return in this follow-up to their initial oddball comedy of an adventure, Moo Moo in a Tutu, once more finding themselves involved in a tale of madcap hi-jinks. Struck yet again with the "best idea ever," Moo Moo launches a new venture: a restaurant! Unfortunately, she and Mr. Quackers aren't the best, whether it be as wait staff or as chefs. Fortunately, Moo Moo has another idea...
I enjoyed What's Cooking, Moo Moo? as much as its predecessor, show more appreciating the pairing of entertaining tale with fun, cartoon-style illustrations. The back and forth between Moo Moo and Mr. Quackers, and between the two and their (unfortunate!) diners, is quite amusing. The duck's reaction to his friend's over-the-top ideas is sure to win some chuckles from young listeners. Recommended to anyone who enjoyed the first tale about these two, as well as to those seeking new stories about oddball friends and their (mis)adventures. show less
