First off, have you ever seen a more gorgeous cover? That phoenix is everything and a perfect indicator of what you will find between its pages. Fiery women unwilling to accept the status quo any longer, a secret society, magic, slaves, a class war, a former matriarchal society, politics, and phoenixes – Nick Pau Preto’s novel enflames a primal instinct to fight against injustice and arbitrary class and gender distinctions. Veronyka’s determination to become a phoenix rider makes you show more want to take up jousting, while her experiences have you crying out in anger and justice. Crown of Feathers is everything you want it to be after staring at its mesmerizing cover, and it is glorious. Long live women who never take no for an answer! show less
One wouldn’t think a book about the walking dead, ghosts, and bones would be fun, but I certainly think Nicki Pau Preto’s BONESMITH is exactly that. Wren is a fabulous character, and I enjoyed nothing more than her bluffing and strutting her way through every situation. Everyone should have that level of confidence! And yet, Ms. Presto allows us to see the soft, gooey heart at her core, the one that craves love and acceptance and who has been damaged by her father’s and grandmother’s show more distance. While BONESMITH did not hold many surprises, I enjoyed every reveal as it happened. I love a good magic mystery and a character discovering unknown powers, and BONESMITH delivers that and more. show less

💀📚✨

Let me start by saying: this book had *vibes*. Ghost-fighting warriors? A noble House of Bone? A kidnapped prince? A broody ironsmith named Julian?? Yeah, I was strapped in… even if the ride sometimes hit a few potholes. 😅⚔️

🦴 My Thoughts

The Bonesmith really came through with a unique magic system and characters I genuinely enjoyed spending time with. Wren gave main-character energy with her mix of ambition, heart, and “oops I messed up again” chaos. And Julian? show more Listen… the man’s got the kind of grumpy, iron-edged aura that just works. 🔥😏

But—and here’s where the 3 stars come in—the pacing… was crawling like an undead grandma across the Breach. 🧟‍♀️💨 Some moments felt predictable (which normally doesn’t phase me), but the repetitiveness? Yeah, that one poked my patience a little harder than I like.

Still, the world-building? Super interesting. The dynamic between Wren and Julian? Chef’s kiss enemies-to-allies-to-maybe-something-more. The plot progression? Good enough that I do want to continue the series… just not sprinting to the bookstore at 7 AM to grab book two. More like: “Yeah, I’ll get there… eventually.” 😌📖

💬 Favorite Quotes

✨ “Suspecting that no one will care if you're gone and then knowing it for certain are two different things.”
— This line punched me straight in the feelings. No warning. Just boom. Emotional damage. 💔

✨ “She'd take the rage of the living over the silence of the dead any day.”
— Honestly? Same. Rage I can handle. Ghostly silence? Absolutely not.

✨ “Keep the bar low enough and you’re never disappointed.” — Leo
— My new life motto. Thanks, Leo. 😂

📝 Final Thoughts

If you're in the mood for a ghost-filled fantasy with drama, tension, and a magic system that feels fresh, this one’s a solid pick. It didn’t blow my bonesmith boots off, but it gave me enough intrigue—and enough Julian side-eye—to make me curious about where book two takes things.

Would I recommend it? Yes.
Will I shove you toward it? Not unless you need something atmospheric, moody, and undead-light for a weekend read. 😉
