About the Author

Born in Salzburg, Austria, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's life and musical career were fiery but brief. The son of Leopold Mozart, a musician and well-known composer, Wolfgang Mozart was a child prodigy. By the age of 5, he was writing minuets and playing the harpsichord; by the age of 8, he had written show more his first symphony. Because of his prodigious talent, Mozart's father took him and his sister (who was also an excellent musician) on tour throughout Europe, and he met and performed for several royal courts. In 1769, at the age of only 13, Mozart was made concertmaster at the court of the Archbishop of Salzburg. By 1781 he had become unhappy in Salzburg and quarreled with the Archbishop. As a result, he was dismissed from his position and left for Vienna. In 1782, while in Vienna, Mozart married Constanze Weber. Although plagued by troubles, including the deaths of four of his children and his wife's ill health, he composed some of his finest works in Vienna. These included the operas The Abduction from the Seraglio (1782) and Cosi fan tutte (1790), his famous last three symphonies, several piano concertos, and many other works. By 1788 Mozart was seriously in debt. One reason was that audiences began finding some of his latest music difficult and stayed away from his concerts. In the summer of 1791, he began suffering from fever and severe headaches. Later that year he fell into a coma and died on December 5, leaving behind his last great work, the Requiem mass, which was left unfinished. Because he was so poor, his coffin was dumped into an unmarked pauper's grave, and his place of burial remains unknown. Mozart's talent as a musician was tremendous. He could compose whole symphonies and operas in his head, needing only to write them out for performance. His gifts as a composer of endless streams of melodies, beautifully harmonized, are astounding. His symphonies and concerti are brilliant; his chamber music, stunning. His operas Don Giovanni (1787), The Magic Flute (1791), and The Marriage of Figaro (1786), are among the best-known and beloved operas performed today. His brief life has produced nearly two centuries of deserved adulation from the trained musician, the music scholar, and unsophisticated listener. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Thoroughly underrated. Let's not deny it: "Tito" is less dramatically meaty than Mozart's masterpieces, and in any case, his dramas have nothing on the simply sublime nature of his comedies.
However, "La Clemenza di Tito" has a lot to support it. The music is utterly divine: Sesto and Tito get gorgeous arias throughout, and the music for Annio is utterly exquisite. The love duet between Annio and Sevilia is perhaps my favourite Mozart piece, and that's without even discussing the magnificent show more character of Vitellia.

"Tito" will never be an audience favourite, given that its predictable plot hinges on a leader's clemency, rather than anything more invigorating. But I cherish it for its tightly-focussed character parts (the chorus appear only twice, and our six leads handle all the rest), its noble music, never showy but consistently haunting (that closing quintet of Act One, punctuated by an offstage chorus and the light of the Capitol burning down), and a sense that - as with so much of the great composer's music - this score so readily opens up the brilliant yet troubled nature of Mozart's mind, questioning his own talent and career, and only months from death.

Well worth it. See a good production (like the long-running Met production, most recently displayed in cinemas in 2012), and you'll understand.

This Mozart opera - the one which, supposedly, the Emperor declared had "too many notes, Herr Mozart!" - tells the story of Belmonte, a young Spanish nobleman, who journeys to Constantinople to rescue his belovéd, Konstanze, from the harem of Bassa Selim. Things do not work out well, and at the last moment the escapees are thwarted by Osmin, the guardian of the seraglio. Belmonte tries the old "do you know who my father is?" trick, only to have it blow up in his face when Bassa Selim, show more previously sacked from a prestigious position, declares that he knows exactly who Belmonte's father is - he is the person responsible for his downfall, and so his deadliest enemy. Cue Belmonte, Konstanze, the maid Blonde and the servant Pedrillo in a quartet which basically sets "Oh, b*gg*er" to music. But Bassa Selim spares their lives and gives them their liberty, as a demonstration of magnanimity as well as a seizure of the moral high ground over Belmonte's father (which we get the impression he will call in at some unspecified time in the future).

For a comparatively minor opera, the music, sometimes in the then fashionable Turkish style, is quite infectious. The production, directed by Hans Neuenfels, takes the opera's structure as a "Singspiel" - we might call it a musical nowadays - and uses that to double up the players, with each role depicted by both a singer and an actor, who play turn and turn about as the piece switches from music to speech and back again, although this isn't always 100% adhered to, and sometimes the actor and singer play off each other for comic or dramatic effect. The one character where this does not happen is Bassa Selim himself, as his role is only spoken and has no music.

There is little attempt to show the piece in its setting; costumes vary between contemporary to the piece and modern-day, with the exception of Osmin and Belmonte (the latter is shown in a dashing Zorro-style outfit). Slightly more problematic is the chorus, which announces the arrival of Bassa Selim in Act One by appearing as janissaries (including the women, who don false beards for the scene) and brandishing a variety of heads and impaled babies on poles whilst other occupants of the harem are shown as a group of burka'ed women cowering in a corner. For their second appearance, singing a paean of praise to Bassa Selim's wisdom at the end of Act Two, they (and he) have all switched to evening dress, and only then is the full composition of the chorus evident.

Neuenfels then adds a monologue from Bassa Selim to Konstanze, which I always forget to switch on the subtitles for. It is slightly strange, because the opera is effectively finished, and the speech ends quite abruptly, almost as though the monologue is unfinished, or no-one told the camera team and they ran out of tape before its end. An odd ending to an otherwise entertaining video.

These letters, written by Mozart and his father, Leopold Mozart, between October 1777 and July 1778, are surprisingly engrossing. At the time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was about twenty-one or twenty-two and he, accompanied by his mother, was traveling to various cities in western Europe looking for employment while his father and sister held down the fort in Salzburg. The letters begin prosaically enough, with shop talk and frivolous banter from Wolfgang and anxious nagging about money from show more his father. Their affection for each other is clear, but so is the frustration inherent in the situation of a father/husband juggling tight finances and trying to micromanage the spending of his young adult son and his wife in distant cities. You can clearly picture the parties at both ends of the correspondence slapping their foreheads in annoyance as they try to convey the fact that they are doing their level best to manage things well and why can't their son/father understand this? But then tragedy strikes and the anguish and difficulties of communicating illness and loss through a slow mail system are clear. Even in the midst of sorrow and loss, though, the mundane intrudes, the way it does. The final letters are a touching mix of spiritual concerns and consolations, employment updates, and practical advice. This is number 51 in Penguin's Little Black Classics series, and I enjoyed it very much. show less
P. Craig Russell’s library of Opera Adaptations is a three volume collection of classic operas adapted into graphic novel form. The success of these adaptations is not just in their communication of classic operas into an accessible form, but as artworks in themselves. Russell’s characters are not a series of “talking heads” charged only with telling the story, but elements in what are true adaptations; transforming the operas into a completely different medium while remaining true show more to the spirit of the original works. Russell makes full use of the graphic novel form to capture the imaginative scope of the works he is adapting and makes artistic and interpretive decisions that bring out the drama and musicality of sequential art. His adaptations are written using English language translations of the original libretti.

VOLUME ONE

The Magic Flute

magic-fluteThe first volume contains a single work; Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Mozart’s original opera is a simple story of light versus dark; Sarastro representing the light and the Queen of the Night, the dark. The young hero Tamino is tricked by the Queen of the Night into believing that Sarastro is evil and has kidnapped the Queen of Night’s daughter, the beautiful Pamina. Along with the comedic Papageno, bird catcher to the Queen of the Night, Tamino sets off to rescue the girl. He is given a magic flute, and Papageno some magic bells to aid them in their quest. Russell’s adaptation follows the plot of the opera closely, and draws out its comedic and dramatic elements.

Like the opera, it opens with the overture of Tamino’s nightmare, represented through a series of traditional six panel pages, distinguished by the thick black guttering around them. These snapshot images capture the fragmented nature of Tamino’s dreaming and offer the opportunity for visual comedy in his rude awakening by Papageno, as the bird catcher interrupts the nightmarish dream panels with “Hey” and “Hey Buddy” (11, 12).

The opportunity for comedy in Tamino’s naïve chivalry and foolish nature is likewise capitalised on with great efficacy as the boy exclaims with one hand raised in the air, the other on his chest “I will rescue her though all of hell should conspire…” before being cut off by the Queen of the Night: “Indeed my son, indeed…” (18). Particularly effective here is use of the font to indicate both Tamino’s pomposity and the Queen of the Night’s interruption. Tamino’s speech, and through it his conformity to strict codes of conduct and high ideals, is represented in large, capitalised, uniform font inside a square speech bubble. The large, bold “Indeed” with which the Queen of the Night interrupts, forces the curve of its speech bubble out into a jagged edge, the font then decreasing into standard size.

As an adaptation of an opera, the representation of musical elements in this graphic novel is a particularly interesting and pertinent subject for consideration. With film and stage adaptations, the music is preserved regardless of how much the story may get manipulated; for the graphic novel, it is the music itself that has to be adapted into the purely visual/ textual stream. In Russell’s The Magic Flute, the music of the opera is experienced obliquely through the pacing and rhythm of the panels. While the panels do not represent an exact recreation of the tempo of the piece in visual form, it paints the piece in broad brushstrokes throughout. For readers familiar with the music of the opera before encountering the adaptation, it is often extremely evocative of the original music as you are reading, though this is dependent on an amount of foreknowledge.

[...]

Overall, there is a great sensitivity to the thematic light and dark of Mozart’s opera in Russell’s adaptation which plays out beautifully in the visual art, and the setting is true to the original’s chivalric and magical underpinnings. It is a faithful telling of the story that offers a way in to the opera for new listeners and a beautiful companion for more seasoned opera lovers.
