This book is a reproduction of the original 1904 biography by a long-time friend of Nast's; it came out shortly after Nast passed away, and some years after he had faded out of the public limelight. It was, for many years, the standard biography of Nast, and still remains entertaining, especially since it is very rich in copies of Nast's work from Harper's Weekly. I have seen some revisionist thought on Nast, especially some of his more virulent anti-Catholic cartoons (a reflection of his show more German upbringing), but this still remains a book you need to read if you want to learn about Nast. This was a terrific book, made all the better by Librivox's amazing narration. I frequently found myself forgetting that this was being narrated, so convinced was I by the way the reader took on the role. I feel inspired to listen to more books by Mark Twain, now that I've become acquainted with him. I never realised how popular he was or how remarkable. And I'll be looking out for more books by Albert Paine too.
In this unusual story, Bosephus, a little boy, comes upon a bear fiddling the familiar strains of the Arkansaw Traveler. The bear's name is Horatio, Ratio for short. Horatio is overjoyed to find that Bosephas can sing and whistle the tunes he likes to play, and they agree to travel about together as a team, to give performances over the countryside and conquer the world.

A witty, gay, amusing story, told with all of Albert Bigelow Paine's delicious humor.

First published in 1898 and described show more by the author as "A Tale of Fanciful Adventure Told in Song and Story". Illustrated throughout. show less
