The same sort of grotesque comedy violence and mayhem as you get in the Stuart McBride books, only the protagonist here is a human violence-and-profanity-generating machine, so the dial is pushed up to eleven as he goes to London hunting for the missing daughter of an old comrade. He beats up a lot of people, and also insults a lot of people, often at the same time, occasionally slowing down for moments of self-refelction and pathos, then stabbing someone in the foot with a screwdriver while show more lying in a pool of his own piss. It's that kind of book. show less
JD Kirk loves his totally crazy characters, and it’s good to see he doesn’t confine himself to males when it comes to crazy.
In this short thriller, Elizabeth becomes frantic when her nine-year-old daughter goes missing after a school Halloween event.
She can’t tell the police or they might dig up secrets about her she needs to stay hidden. She can’t even let anyone know Hollie is missing.
The secrets slowly emerge in this psychological thriller, with some big twists at the show more end.
Evaluation: I always enjoy JD Kirk. Others have said they guessed the twists in this; I most emphatically did not. I loved encountering them, and I love his very, very dark sense of humor that peeks out from time to time in this gritty novel. show less

Score! Just a quickie review of a book found lurking on my kindle. I really enjoyed this. Set in Scotland, you get a twisty mystery/investigation but what lifts this above many in the genre are the great characters. MC Logan is a smart but fallible man with a keenly observant & dry sense of humour. He gets parachuted into a rural force when they catch a case that resembles one he worked on years ago. His interaction with the local police & residents is entertaining & the dialogue really show more makes the story. My first book by this author & since I immediately picked up book 2, it won't be the last. show less
I'm calling it, Kirk's Hoon thrillers are the best comic crime novels since Westlake. They're nasty, brutal, vulgar, violent and hilarious. I laughed out loud many-a-time. He's an anti-hero with a heart of gold. Cursed evil dragon's gold, but gold all the same. Audio reader guy is an absolute champ.
