Short biography
Founded in 1889 to produce karuta (Japanese playing cards)—primarily hanafuda—Nintendo quickly became the primary producer. Though WWII hit the company hard, restructuring under Hiroshi Yamauchi (the founder's grandson) and financing from Hiroshi's wife Michiko Inaba helped the company grow. In 1959, they partnered with Walt Disney Productions, incorporating the characters in their playing cards. In the late 60s to early 70s, the company began producing classic tabletop games, as the market for playing cards was decreasing.

In 1970, it created the Beam Gun, Japan's first electronic toy, quickly followed by a myriad of others. In 1979, a department focused on arcade gaming was created, and in 1980, Gunpei Yokoi created the Game & Watch—the first handheld video game system. In 1983, the Family Computer (Famicom) was released in Japan, and in 1985 it came to the US as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Nintendo created strict copyright infringement policies and regional lockouts so as to deal with the video game recession in 1983.

In 1989, Nintendo released the Game Boy, which became a major success. Nintendo Power—a gaming magazine—launched in 1988 in the US. The Super Famicom/Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) launched in 1990 in response to sales slipping, quickly dominating the market. This was followed by the Virtual Boy (1995), Nintendo 64 (N64, 1996), Game Boy Color (GBC, 1998), Game Boy Advance (GBA, 2001), GameCube (GC, 2001), Nintendo DS (NDS, 2004), Wii (2006), Nintendo 3DS (2011), and Wii U (2012). Struggles in 2015 with Wii U financial losses and Satoru Iwata's death led to Nintendo dipping into the mobile market as well as creating home emulation consoles based on old systems. The Nintendo Switch launched in 2017 and Shuntaro Furukawa took over as president in 2018. Super Nintendo World opened at Universal Studios Japan in 2021 and Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023. The Nintendo Switch 2 was announced for 2025.

This book covers 17 Super Mario games in depth, each section including the game's basic story, features, playable characters, allies, enemies, an overview of all worlds and courses, info on items and obstacles, and a list of some memorable moments and some helpful gameplay tips and techniques. The end of the book includes a lengthy timeline of all games from 1984-2015 with some sort of connection to Mario (even if it's just via Donkey Kong, or a brief cameo in the artwork somewhere). There show more are also full-page columns throughout on topics like spin-off games, remakes, anniversary events, and more.

I know for a fact that my family had a Nintendo Entertainment System when I was growing up, and I think we might have had a Super Nintendo Entertainment System, although I'm not 100% sure about that. After that, that was pretty much the end of my direct experience with Nintendo and its games until I picked up a Nintendo Switch during the pandemic.

This had a lot more detail crammed into it than I expected, and even with the large page-size, all those tiny pictures and text could be a bit overwhelming. I read the entries for the first few games that I had memories of playing more thoroughly than a lot of the later ones.

I found myself unreasonably angry on behalf of my child self while reading the "helpful hints & techniques" section for the first Super Mario Bros. game. Child Me would have really appreciated those tips, darn it, and now it's well past the time I can make use of any of them.

The Super Mario Bros. 2 (called Super Mario USA in Japan) section was a weird reading experience. The images of the vegetables, particularly the turnips, instantly gave me flashbacks of playing the game, which I'd previously completely forgotten about.

All in all, this was an interesting enough read, although it felt more like a combination of an ad and game guide than an encyclopedia. Its focus is on Japanese and US release info (the timeline is organized according to US release dates if the game was released in both US and Japan), so if you're interested in release info in other areas of the world you're out of luck.

Having played the original Nintendo/Famicom versions of these games, I can say in all seriousness that the Gameboy Advance version is far superior. Many of the issues from the original games were addressed, and gameplay has overall been tightened. Looking at the FF series (1-6, at least) I think FF1 became a little too easy with the tweaks, but then FF1 is a pretty good starter game/introduction to the FF franchise. It also came with FF2, so overall a good package deal.

This is an excellent show more guide for game completists who want to get all the items/spells/beasts/etc in the games, and is especially handy when it comes to the levelling system in FF2 (which I am deeply, immensely thankful was not repeated for future FF games) show less
... What's this? Elemental crystals AGAIN? (we had this in FF1, 3, and 4 already. But what the hell...) However, this game set itself apart in several ways including a nice Jobs system that allowed you to customize your characters and their strengths, so you could choose various abilities for each character to have a totally kick-ass team. The story itself was also pretty good.

This guide is a great guide to these jobs and what skills you can develop, among other things. Like the other FF show more strategy guides, this one is worth reading. show less
A solid, old-school classic. Who'd have imagined this would have spawned such a memorable franchise, it's 40+ years later and Mario's still going strong! This video game in itself is pretty basic compared to future Mario games but there's charm in its simplicity and gameplay.
