This is the book that taught me how to knit. It got me into it to begin with. It's instructions are perfect for someone who has never knitted before. BONUS: it has a left-handed section. For us left-handers, this was the best!
A good book on learning to crochet, with both instruction and some patterns. The patterns aren't very excited, but there are a few nice projects there for beginners. My copy came with a kit that included a crochet hook and maybe a few other things, like a stitch gauge.
