For anyone interested in Bosnia or in Islam, this is a must-read. Bringa, a cultural anthropologist, spent 18 months in a village in central Bosnia in the late 1980s. The village was a mixed Catholic (Croat) - Muslim village. This field work demonstrates the complex social realities of pre-war Bosnia, as well as how differing identities are formed in positive way. It also debunks the "ancient hatreds" thesis that has become so common in discussions of Bosnia.

After you read this book, be sure show more to see the documentary that Bringa made in 1993, entitled We are all neighbours (produced & directed by Debbie Christie ; Granada Television.
Publisher: Chicago, Ill. : Public Media/Films Inc. Video, c1993). Bringa returned to the same village, at the moment the war came to that region of Bosnia. The documentary captures how violence from outside and fear can destroy an otherwise functioning community.
