I read the first book in this series, Last Breath, and gave it 5 stars so was really hoping that this one would continue the "5-star streak". I was a bit disappointed. Not that it was exactly a bad book...it just lacked the "reality" that the first book had. The main character, Kaylie, is not a police officer and she doesn't even have her degree yet in "criminal behavior" yet the Chief of Police calls her in to investigate the murders? Really??? My husband spent 10 years in two Florida show more police departments and 22 in years with a department in Michigan. When I asked him if this would ever happen, he looked at me like I had grown an extra head and then said .."oh, you're reading "cop fiction" again.". Kylie did scatterbrained things and was way too reckless when confronting possible murder suspects. I thought she had a latent death wish. I know that many authors like to draw a reading audience for their next book by leaving their current book readers with a cliff hanger...which I don't particularly like. This one has one of those...but then so did the first one. I want to know how the story that I'm currently reading ends and not having to wait sometimes a year or more for the next one. show less
DEAD INSIDE introduces FBI Special Agent Kelsy Hawk. She's 30 and a loose cannon. Her latest case which showed up her boss has caused her to be assigned to a small town in North Dakota. Her boss hoped it would get her to quit.
Upon arrival, Kelsey walks into a case of a young woman frozen into a block of ice and displayed in the ice carving area of the Winter Fair. Working with a Deputy Sheriff, she tackles the biggest crime to have ever happened in the small town. The first death is quickly show more followed by two more. Each young woman is frozen into a block of ice and displayed.
The story is also told from the viewpoint of the murderer who is completely insane. His fantasies and justifications were creepy reading.
I enjoyed this first in a series. show less

I had never read this author before. It wasn't a bad story by any means, but I had trouble really caring much for the main character of Ashley. The story line was promising and there were a lot of twists and turns as well as a lot of bodies. Of course, the body count was supposed to build up to further the plot along. The story was interesting, but I didn't find myself really caring much as the outcome was fairly predictable, but to be fair...I would be willing to give the series another try.

I read this book in October of 2024, but didn’t get to writing the review until now. Because Life. You’d think I wouldn’t remember what it was about since it was so long ago, but as soon as I started reading the blurb all of its horrible glory came back to me. So, it made an impression on me. Just not a good one.
The main character is TSTL. I mean, what in the actual fuck? No. Everything about this is bad. The boring bits (which is most of it), the show more two-dimensional characters, and the crappy narration. Skip this one. I’m serious.
Now, having said all that, I have picked up other audios by Kate Bold over on Chirp. I will give her another shot. Or two or three. Just not book 2 in this series. Because Kaylie is a twat of the first order. show less
