Brigadier Desmond Young met Rommel once right after he was captured by Rommel's Afrika Corp soldiers. Since Young was involved in the War in the Desert, he had first hand knowledge of what it was like to be there. He had access to Rommel's papers, interviewed his family and German officers who served with him including his batman, thus he wrote this book from many sources. He also interviewed Allied officers who faced Rommel in battle. The one opponent who did not appreciate Rommel's show more reputation was Eisenhower. We learn how it took Rommel a long time to realize Hitler was the problem and not just his gangster entourage. This is a good look at what went on inside the German High Command and how lucky the Allies were that some of them were so incompetent and self seeking that they hindered their own war effort. Young has made this very readable despite the detail. show less
Alright. Gave a good insight into his later involvement in the war.
1122 Rommel: The Desert Fox, by Desmond Young (read 30 Jul 1971) This is a 1950 biography by an Englishman, which was too haphazard to please me.
