"Bang, Bang, You're Dead" is a quick, entertaining read for younger teens. The book moves from past to present through Mia's flashbacks as she races to confront the gunman thinking it's her twin brother. This is not really a crime story, instead it deals with mental illness and the effects it has on family members. Mia's mother is bipolar and the author has realistically portrayed her illness, her highs and lows, her refusal to take the medication and her extreme fear of doctors and show more hospitals. Mia is the sensible one in the family struggling not only to cope with her mother's fragile state but also deal with her increasingly angry and distant brother. Although the ending felt rushed, the twist at the end is clever and totally unexpected. I will definitely be looking for other books by this author. show less
This charming story blends friendship, teamwork, and a touch of magic, making it a delightful and easy-to-read adventure for young readers who love fairies and imagination.
Initially, the book was promising, portraying the difficulties of a child looking after a disabled mother. However, I didn't find the main character's internal monologue believable; she was far too adult for a 12 year old. I also felt the reveal of the girl's back story rather hurried when it could have been more suspenseful.
Ruby the Red Fairy is the first book in the series Rainbow Fairies from Rainbow Magic. The book follows as friends Kristy and Rachel discover a pot at the end of a rainbow, only to find Ruby the Red Fairy instead of a pot of gold. Ruby tells the girls about a curse put on her and her sisters, and she needs their help to find her sisters! They keep the colors alive in Fairyland, so without them, Fairyland will lose its colors and become gray forever. This book explores themes of fantasy, show more adventure, and perseverance. For example, in the book, Ruby begins to lose her color as an effect of the curse, and the girls make a promise to find the rest of the fairies and save everyone, showing strength and willingness. This book would strongly resonate with young readers because of the whimsical themes and aspects, such as fairies and magic, that appear in book. show less
