this book needed editing, but i did learn a lot which is why i rated it as highly as i did. the author was passionate about her research. she cared deeply for her involved relatives and for people she met mainly in poland who helped her research her relatives who lived and died there during world war II. learning of the country's coverup was upsetting, and not surprising. unfortunately, it is very similar to what is happening now in this country to people perceived as others. those of us who show more know the truth must continue to share it with our descendants. show less

Because the bodies were planted in the garden of those who did try to make a difference.
This is told from the perspective of the author as she journeyed nine times (1991-2021) with her uncle show more back to the Poland of his past trying to locate one woman relative who escaped from being murdered by her neighbors for the crime of hiding a Jewish family. It's a tough read at times for one whose grandmother came from Poland. A good and necessary read.
I requested and received an EARC from Sourcebooks via NetGalley. Thank you.

The book was badly written but the information was amazing. Strange when speaking to survivors many had stories to tell about how terrible the Poles were during the WWII. Interesting that they saved people as well. Strange that Jews were not acknowledged as part of the population.
