Esther Newton really is amazing. I came to her work through the Cherry Grove, Fire Island history, and was so excited that I dug out some of her other anthropology work. This great set of essays lays out her approaches and thinking in anthropology and other matters.
One of my favorite histories; anthropological and using significant oral history. A snapshot of gay/lesbian 20th century history, as well as a great history of 'place'.
An interesting anthropological consideration of drag queens in the 1960s. A lot of it the information is dated, but it's interesting to see what parts continue to linger, particularly in the perceived distinctions made between the queens themselves.
