The Case Against Lawyers: How the Lawyers, Politicians, and Bureaucrats Have Turned the Law into an Instrument of Tyranny--and What We as Citizens Have to Do About It by Catherine Crier
These are the kind of books which drive me crazy, not because of the way it's written, but because of the topic. Just reading about many of the lawsuits, frivolous in many cases, and the costs to society which must be borne because of them, drives me crazy. It's hard to read because it makes me so frustrated, and despite the promise of the title, I still don't feel empowered to do much about the inequities and unfairness, and illogic of the system we have. But if everyone read this, and if show more everyone because as fed-up with the system as I felt, perhaps at some point in time society could turn things around and agree that tort reform is worthwhile. show less
I enjoyed this book for the snapshot and collection of all events in the case of Laci Peterson. It's frustrating because you want to understand what happened and why. This book can't answer those deeper questions, but it a good recap of the events as they unfolded - the only answers we may ever have.
The Left blames the Conservative Right, the Right blames the Liberal Left, Crier finds blames in both sides, then offers her take on steps needed to "save the Republic". Unfortunately, the likelihood of anything substantive changing in the near future? Slim.
